The importance of the approach that dentists can dedicate to the patient in his entirety is clearly evident when it comes to the achievable results with therapy.
With this belief, our dentists not only focus attention on the mouth but also consider the position of the shoulders, spine, and feet, completing the analysis with photographs that document the case at the beginning, during treatment, and at the end.
Many times, winged scapulae, pelvic rotations, shoulder pain, and incorrect head positions are signs of problems that reside higher up, often at the level of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
It should be considered that there is a relationship between the mouth and occlusion.
The overall posture of the body is regulated by various receptors such as the eye, ear, skin, feet, and even teeth that send messages from the periphery to the center (brain).
The posture examination considers the positions of the various parts of the body and analyzes whether the information sent by the receptors is correct.
The first part of the posture examination consists of precise data collection and measurements. Specific tests are then performed for a more careful evaluation of the various body receptors.
The eyes are checked for convergence and good vision of the visual field. The ear is also considered because an internal part, represented by the vestibular system, is fundamental for the posture of the body. Its functionality is assessed with special tests such as the Romberg test or Fukuda test, which analyze balance or swaying.
The mobility and ability of the head to rotate are also checked.
Occlusion and the jaw then require a series of specific exams with the mouth open and closed, and with specific maneuvers, it is investigated whether a descending influence is present (from the mouth to the feet) that may justify the postural alterations present.
Influences from the viscera and emotions can also be investigated.
The feet are analyzed for shape and support and for this reason we send you to the article dedicated to the stabilometric platform.
The posture examination includes many elements and evaluations that make it a rather long and detailed appointment that, to be performed correctly, requires more than an hour of time.
